It should come as no surprise that I believe in the power of a word fitly written. Especially when it’s handwritten in a card that has been delivered the old-fashioned way. We live in a world that’s constantly connected and plugged in. We leave comments on facebook walls, carry on conversations in text messages and send tweets to one another all day long, which is all nice and convenient, but I really miss the days of handwritten letters and cards.

The best relationships of my life have been maintained by handwritten cards and letters, posted with a stamp and delivered to my mailbox. I have stacks of personal notes stashed in a box in my desk drawer, and I pull them out from time to time to relive a memory or receive some encouragement. Those cards and letters mean the world to me.

One of the greatest women I’ve ever known is a master of written correspondence. I don’t know how many cards, letters, and thank you notes she writes in the course of a week, but it has to be in the double digits. I have a stack of postcards in her signature script, all delivered to my campus post office box when I was a student at Mississippi State. Any college student knows the value of a real piece of mail. There’s nothing more depressing than trudging all the way across campus to peer in the window of your post office box, only to find nothing but a CD from AOL. Mrs. June taught me that a handwritten card can change a person. The fact that she noticed when I was struggling and took the time to sit down and write me to let me know that she was praying for me changed my life.

I’ve tried to emulate her, but I really don’t sit down to write a note as often as I should. I’ve been working to change that lately. I do, after all, own a custom stationery business. Recently, a college friend posted a snapshot of a card I had written her on facebook. The card was several years old, but she said she kept it because it still cheers her up when she’s down. My jaw dropped when I saw the photo. I couldn’t believe that a simple note that I had completely forgotten about had made such an impact, and it inspired me to pick up my pen and start using some of the stationery that I make. Over the past week, I’ve dropped two cards in the mail, and I’m planning on writing more over the course of the next few days. I hope to make it a lifelong habit.

So, keep your eyes open and don’t forget to check your mail. You may just find a note from me in that rusty old box!

What about you? When was the last time you got a handwritten note in the mail? How did it make you feel? Who are you writing to this week?

Until next time, grace and peace.

It’s birthday season in the Jones household. Mine came and went on Saturday, and, shockingly enough, baby girl’s first birthday is coming up next month. I didn’t eat any cake or blow out any candles on my birthday, but I did go out on a date with my hubby, and then we went to Best Buy and drooled over my new camera. OK, so it’s not mine yet. But I have ordered it. And it should arrive sometime in the next century.

The camera is definitely one of the best birthday presents ever. Four years ago, my sweet husband coerced our entire family into pooling their money and purchasing me a Canon Rebel XT. It has been good to me, but it’s time to upgrade, so I’ve sold it, and my parents and in-laws once again donated funds to make up the difference. Thanks, y’all!

I’m not the only one who likes presents, right? Let’s be honest. We all like gifts. And packages in the mail. And cards from friends and family. And freebies.

That’s why I’m giving away two sets of custom notecards from Senojal Designs. I’m celebrating my birthday by giving gifts to you!

To enter, simply click through to my etsy shop, browse through the custom notecards, and leave a comment on this post telling me which design is your favorite. It’s that simple! Please use your actual e-mail address on the comment form, otherwise I won’t be able to get in touch with you if you win.

Now for the nitty gritty details. One entry per person, please. Feel free to share some giveaway love and tweet, blog, or update your status with a link to this blog entry. The giveaway will be open from now until 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, August 17. Two winners {selected by a random number generator} will each receive one set of 12 custom notecards from Senojal Designs.

Now, get to to commenting! And spread the birthday love!

Until next time, grace and peace.

In case you haven’t noticed, I have a daughter. A little daughter. A daughter who is nine and a half months old and checks in at barely 15 pounds. She’s tiny. Tiny people require carseats. And carseats with tiny people in them are heavy. Really heavy. Even if you only have to haul them around for a few minutes.

I love the job that carseats perform, but they’re such a hassle. It takes so much time to strap Micah in and out of her seat that if I’m only going to be out of the car with her for a few minutes, I roll up my sleeves and take out the whole carrier. Because it’s easier. And faster. But heavier.

So when Senojal Designs started booming and the orders rolled in, I consolidated my trips to the post office as much as I could. I was grateful for the business, but I hated the six-mile roundtrip trek to the post office, hauling Micah in and out of the car in the aforementioned carrier, standing in line, juggling packages, and wasting 30 minutes of my day on such a mundane task.

I started looking for solutions.

Many etsy sellers choose to use the integrated shipping option offered by PayPal, but I just couldn’t bring myself to do that. Have you ever gotten a package with a PayPal label taped to the front of it? They’re ugly, no? I want my packages to be pretty, just like the stationery I sell, so PayPal shipping was out for me.

Other etsy sellers recommended using stamps.com for shipping, but since I’m cheap frugal, I refused to pay the monthly service fee. I don’t need all the bells and whistles that come with a service like stamps.com. I just wanted to print postage like the post office. I wasn’t interested in big labels or tracking packages. Just postage, please.

I ordered a kitchen shipping scale from Amazon and continued to research my options.

When I first stumbled upon Endicia, I dismissed it as I had stamps.com, but when I revisited the site, I found what I had been looking for all along: printable postage with no monthly fee. I couldn’t have been more excited. I downloaded the software, ordered some postage labels, and waited anxiously to try it out.

Y’all, it couldn’t have been easier. So far, I’ve shipped four packages using Endicia’s free service, and I can’t recommend it highly enough. No more trips to the post office while lugging around a heavy baby carrier. Only a walk to the mailbox while Micah naps.

As with all things that seem too good to be true, there is a catch. For one thing, you can only print first class postage for packages that weigh 13 ounces or less. If your package weighs more than that, you’ll have to either take it to the post office, or use a Priority Mail flat rate box {Endicia does print flat rate Priority Mail postage}. The vast majority of my packages weigh less than 13 ounces, so this really isn’t an issue for me. I don’t mind going to the post office occasionally, I’m just not interested in going two or three times a week.

Before you sign up for Endicia’s printable postage, you should know that you can only print the postage on labels supplied by Endicia. I paid roughly $20 for 124 labels, which is a negligible cost for me. It’s worth it to avoid the post office.

If you’re running a small business from home and looking for an inexpensive shipping solution, this is the way to go. Seriously. I wouldn’t lie to you. See for yourself, and let me know what you think!

Until next time, grace and peace.

One of the most common questions I get from customers regards the color of the envelopes they will receive with their order. Most of my invitations and notecards are printed on heavy linen cardstock, and they come with matching white linen envelopes. For me, the luxurious texture of linen won out over colored envelopes, however cute they may be.

That said, I’ve noticed a new trend that’s a wonderful way to dress up white envelopes, and I’m excited to announce a new section to Senojal Designs :: DIY Printable files. I’ve sold a number of printable designs to customers, and I’ve finally started to list them in the etsy shop, beginning with address label envelope wraps.

Have you seen these? They’re super cute and simple to use. Each label measures 7 x 2 inches and wraps snugly around a standard A2 size envelope (4.375 x 5.75 inches). You don’t even have to have any special material to print these little gems. Just print them on plain white printer paper, cut out, and adhere to your envelopes with a glue stick. Wanna know what’s even better? You can print the file as many times as you want. It’s yours to use just one time, or 100 times. It’s up to you! You cannot, of course, accept credit for the design, sell the file or distribute it to others, but other than that, your options are pretty much endless.

Could these be any cuter? Over the next several days, I’ll be launching all kinds of DIY Printable files :: from envelope wraps to party circles to banners and favor tags. All of these items will, of course, complement my line of invitations, and they’re the perfect way to coordinate all aspects of your special events.

Stay tuned for new designs rolling out soon!

Until next time, grace and peace.

Hi! Remember me? I used to blog here, but over the past couple of weeks, life got busy and crazy, and it became easier to pretend this site didn’t exist than it did to actually write a post.

Over the weekend, Senojal Designs blew past the 50-sales mark on etsy, and to celebrate the milestone, I’m offering a 15 percent discount to all blog readers from today, May 24, until the end of the month. Offer expires at 11:59 p.m. May 31. To take advantage of this offer, enter ETSY50 in the message to seller section during checkout on etsy, and I’ll issue you a refund for the difference!

Because life has been busy, my thoughts have been fragmented and disjointed, and I don’t have that much to say.

But, I do want to share some of the fruits of the busy-ness with you. Last week, I had the privilege of designing some super fun birthday party invitations for a sweet friend’s children. I like designing custom stationery for kids because it allows me to be more playful and fun than I get to be in my other designs.

Know anyone having a pool party?

What about a space-themed rocket party?

I had a lot of fun with these designs, and I was pleasantly surprised when my sister-in-law contacted me to request some rocket invitations for my rambunctious little nephew. I love being able to create something special for my friends and family. Selling custom stationery on etsy has been very rewarding, but there’s something incredibly validating and special about making stationery for people who actually know me.

Until next time, grace and peace.

Becoming a mother has made me appreciate all the little things my mom did for me when I was Micah’s age. I may have taken those things for granted for the past 27 years, but now that I know how difficult it is to take care of an infant, I’ll never take it for granted again. Mother’s Day is this Sunday, and it will be a special day in our household. Not only is it my very first time to celebrate the day as a mother, but we will also have Micah’s baby dedication at church, and we’ll get to spend the weekend with our moms. I’m looking forward to it.

Has Mother’s Day crept up on you this year?

It’s OK. You can confess.

Admit it, some of you haven’t given much thought to the fact that Mother’s Day is this Sunday. Don’t worry, I’m here to save you from mama drama. How so? By giving you another freebie, courtesy of Senojal Designs.

This free printable card features a mama and baby bird on a whimsical tree branch. Feel free to print the card as many times as you like and give it to all the special mothers in your life.

The nitty gritty details about downloading this file: You may not accept credit for the design of this card or sell it to anyone. Senojal Designs retains the copyright. If you wish to share the digital file with others, please direct them to this post. Do not e-mail the file all over the world. Please don’t link directly to the download file – link to this post instead. Instructions for printing and cutting the card are included in the digital file. Click here to download the free printable Mother’s Day card!

Enjoy! If you download the card and like it, leave me a comment to let me know. Thanks!

Until next time, grace and peace.

Micah and I loaded up early this morning and headed out to the pediatrician. The verdict? The tonsillitis is gone {praise God}, but she’s got a little bit of an upper respiratory infection. The course of action? A different antibiotic and some decongestant. I hope my baby feels better soon.

Last night I promised to share a couple of new designs with you. The big news is that my father made a generous donation to Senojal Designs and allowed me to purchase the most beautiful and elegant font I’ve ever seen: Adios Script font by Ale Paul. Because of this donation, I was able to design some simply elegant rehearsal dinner invitations for one of my favorite clients, Suzi.

We started with this:

I love the mix of hard and soft. The play between the swirling script and the straight-laced type. It’s beautiful, but it wasn’t quite right for Suzi.

So we tweaked it to end up with this:

Love this one too. The lime green pops off the invitation, and I love the way the M overlaps with the swirls. Beautiful, and perfect for Suzi.

I love custom orders. They give me a chance to try new things and be creative. I also had fun playing with the new font.

Open Type fonts are a fun new world that I’m just beginning to explore. Expect to hear more about them in the future :)

Until next time, grace and peace.

It’s been a crazy week. Senojal Designs has been fairly busy, which is good, but it also means that Micah and I went to the post office three times this week, and I went again this morning while Dennis kept the little lady. The post office is a 6-mile roundtrip outing from our house. Did you know that if you’re self-employed, you can write off little business trips to the post office and bank? Six miles doesn’t sound like much, but going 3 to 4 times a week adds up to 18 to 24 miles, which (using the mileage rate for 2010 taxes) adds up to $9 to $12 a week I can write off on next year’s taxes. To continue the math, $9 a week for 52 weeks adds up to $468 a year. That’s a tax deduction I’ll take, thank you very much.

If you’re self-employed and keeping your own books, you should look into an online service like outright.com. It has lots of good features for keeping up with expenses and income, and it even has a mileage calculator to help you keep up with all of those little trips. It has been a great help to me.

Another site that I’ve found helpful and interesting is smaller box. Every week, smaller box posts a list of the most valuable small business articles of the week. I’ve found helpful input and good ideas from all of these links.

And finally, if you’re a fellow etsy seller, you really should subscribe to the Storque and keep up with all the latest etsy happenings there. The Storque frequently posts tips and tutorials to help our little businesses succeed. You should check it out.

That’s all I’ve got for now. It’s time to hop in the shower while Micah naps. If I’m fast, I’ll be able to get completely ready before she stirs. We’ll see how it goes.

Until next time, grace and peace.
